ETHICS Implicit Bias in Health Care (6 CEs)

There is extensive evidence and research that finds unconscious biases can lead to differential treatment of patients by race, gender, weight, age, language, income and insurance status.

Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. Minority families must rely on a health care system that is overwhelmingly white and has historically treated patients of color poorly, even going so far as to use them as subjects of unethical experiments. Research has found that lingering distrust and discrimination contribute to worse health among minorities, who experience higher rates of heart disease and kidney failure, and a shorter lifespan, on average.

Everyone has implicit biases, and recognizing them is an important first step to reducing healthcare disparities and promoting fairness and quality outcomes. In this course, we will target the following objectives:

Describe the effects of unconscious bias in everyday interactions with patients, students, colleagues, and team members.
